Can I try this?

I wonder if you’d be so kind as to help me with a little drawing problem.
I’ve have a Lawn Sprinkler business in Aurora Colorado for the past 34 years and I’ve always provided my customers with an as-built, scaled plan of the system we’ve installed.
I’ve been on Macintosh computers since 1984 (used to be a teacher), and have been using a very simple, but full-featured 2D Mac program since 1992 called Expert Landscape Design to draw the plans. It has done everything I’ve ever needed.
I have now switched completely over to Windows PC’s except I still keep my old Mac only for the sprinkler plans. This makes for a very crowded desktop so I’d like to find a Windows program thet would accomplish the same thing.
I bought a Windows version of Expert landscape design on ebay which was a completely different program/author. Useless for my purposes.
I tried the Punch software, Broderbund (older version) and a lot of others, but I cant seem to find one that will acomplish what i need. Smart Draw is close but they want $275 for the darn thing.
I Don’t need 3D, Landscape Symbols, Walkarounds or any of the extras I find in a lot of programs.
What I need is a 2D program that will, in Windows XP, enable me to:
1. Set a scale BEFORE I begin the drawing to ensure I can fit it on letter sized paper to facilitate copying, and display the scaled dimensions either in an info bar or as a dimension line, as I draw . I don’t need the dimenison lines to display pemanently, but just to display while I’m drawing so I know what I’m drawing. I use 1″=10′, 1″=12′, 1″=16′, 1″=20′, etc. Whatever will make it fit on the page along with the legend below, and let me know the length or dimensions of the item I’m drawing as I draw it.
2. Draw the property lines for the lot from scratch either using line or rectangle tools with different widths and textures and displaying the dimensiions as I draw. (so I know when to stop)
3. Be able to draw symbols like circles and rectangles to represent heads and valves and insert them into the legend and the plan. What i do now is copy/paste them from the legend.
4. A bezier, spline, or freehand tool (w different widths/textures) to draw curves to represent pipes, edging, patios, pools etc.
I’ve downloaded some of the CAD programs, and I can’t see any way to set a scale before I start the drawing and display the dimensions in an info bar or something while I draw.
They all seem unnecessarily complicated and have a print scale at the end, but I don’t see any way to set a scale at the beginning and to draw a line and know that it’s 28.6′ as you’re drawing it. They display the Cartesian coordinates or some other such complicated display. The simplest way would be for the origin or XY zero points to be in the upper left corner with rulers and a grid displayed with the current scale showing how many feet.
I know your program will do a lot more than I need but will it do those 4 things I’ve listed above?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rich
